What Motivates Us
The 4 P’s of marketing tell us that customers are motivated to purchase through Price, Product, Promotion, and Placement.
What about the fifth “P”? People.
Your people are a core marketing asset. They produce and deliver the product and service that ultimately motivates the customer. But what motivates your people to perform?
New research about employee incentives is turning the idea of employee motivation on its head.
This excellent talk by Daniel Pink (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6XAPnuFjJc) provides great insight http://www.buyambienmed.com into what really motivates us. The accompanying stop-motion animation is really cool, too.
Pink is the author of Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us. He explores the science, psychology, economics, and sociology of motivation and concludes that the methods for getting people to work smarter at mechanistic tasks don’t necessarily work for creative problem solving.
In other words, as you think about motivating your future managers, don’t assume that more money provides more motivation.
