In the trench warfare of business, what can make a key difference in a company’s success is the quality of employees’ knowledge. And knowledge can be broadly divided into two categories: explicit and tacit.

Explicit knowledge is easily extracted, documented, and replicated.

Tacit knowledge, though, is difficult to create and hard to explain – and can be the secret sauce in a company’s competitive advantage. This is “wisdom” that is built up over many years. It’s hard-won, it’s unique – and it’s very difficult to teach to others.
